Sports news

Barcelona have broken Real Madrid’s record for the most goals scored in a calendar year by netting a third against Real Betis on Wednesday evening.

Lionel Messi’s strike had pulled Barca level on 178 goals in all competitions with Madrid, who set the record in 2014, while Luis Suarez’s effort has pushed the Spanish champions’ total to 179 for 2015.

Messi has now netted 48 times in 2015, while Suarez has 47 goals and Neymar has 41. Together, the trio have scored 76% of Barcelona’s total goals for the year.
